The terminal prompt is practically like any other operating system. Software meant to be run on this interface can be installed from this prompt using some commands. Windows users might be familiar with the Command Prompt. ![]() When you first run Termux, you will see a command prompt like most Linux terminals. It is however available as a downloadable APK from F-Droid’s site or the F-Droid Store, which is an alternate app store for Android. Termux is available on the Android App store, but updates may not be regular there. The onscreen keyboard (or physical keyboard) will need to be your closest friend. However, software that you install on Termux will run only through the command prompt, with no signs of any touch interface, or shortcuts in your app drawer. Termux can be launched like any other app on your phone. It’s also a good place to learn some Linux commands, and get used to running Linux software on your phone. Termux gives you access to a Linux prompt enabling you to do a whole range of things. This is our little gateway to the Termux terminal emulator. The command line interface (CLI) is an environment that allows for a world of applications and scripts to be run on a device, offering much more information and functionality, even automation even on a device as tiny as a smartphone. Another approach to software exists, though it’s made for the geekier folk who like to tinker with software. There are large buttons and menus with only the essential information displayed in the most colourful and flamboyant manner. Most of the software is often only skin deep, making the most of the limited screen space. While intuitive, there are downsides to this approach too. This makes it easy for anyone to use it, without any prior knowledge of the device or software. The Android operating system is a very refined piece of software, designed specifically for devices with a touchscreen interface. ![]()
